About one in seven motorists on California roadways might be under the influence of drugs, according to a brand-new study by the state's Office of Traffic Safety. The study released Monday checked more than a thousand motorists on weekend nights in nine California cities. Roughly 14 percent of those motorists checked positive for drugs that may hinder driving. Half as many of the motorists surveyed by the OTS checked positive for alcohol. Compared to national stats, the many drug-impaired motorists has actually increased throughout the years. It reinforces officials' belief that driving under the influence of drugs-- in addition to alcohol-- is a significant and growing trouble, said Christopher J. Murphy with the OTS.
