A resilient perspective may be the secret to successful aging, perhaps even outdoing good physical health, locates a new study. Scientist surveyed 1,006 arbitrarily chosen adults in San Diego, Calif. , between the ages of 50 and 99 (with a mean age of about 77) through a 25-minute phone interview, followed by a mail-in study. In addition to evaluating the participants ' physical health conditions, such as persistent condition and disability, the study considered more subjective elements like adults' social engagement and self-assessments of their total health and degree of successful aging. The team found that older adults with reduced physical function however high durability -- the capacity to recover from unfavorable events or setbacks -- had equivalent self-ratings of their degree of successful aging to those of physically healthy people who were less tough.

Key:

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.
